Chapter Activities

Through the years, the Petersburg Chapter has embraced, enhanced, and implemented numerous programs as follows:

·        “Just Say No”: a drug prevention program integrated in the school curriculum, designed to teach students alternatives to drugs and alcohol, benefiting more that 500 students

·        Project (LEAD) Links Erase Alcohol and Drugs: an undertaking which involved 60 sixth grade students atPeabody Middle School

·        CLASS (Children Learning About School and Self):  a program designed for seventh grade females to improve school attendance, grades, participation in extra-curricular activities, and promotion of community involvement

·        SAS (Students Achieving Success):  an enrichment program for fifth grade students at the Children’s Home of Virginia Baptist

·        Workshops:  educational settings for improving test taking skills for area high school students

·        Career Opportunities:  seminars and workshops for area high school students

·        International Teas, Welcome Baskets and Speakers: an activity for foreign students enrolled at area colleges and Fort  Lee personnel

·        Vicarious Support: indirect provisions provided  for South Africa

·        Links to Success : “Children Achieving Excellence”: a comprehensive education based program with effective instructional tutorial enrollment services and a parent involvement component

·        Tutoring : provisions for  individual instructions to elementary, middle, and high school students in area public schools

·        HIV/AID’S: education and awareness sessions for elementary, middle, and high school students, area colleges and churches

·        Achievers’ Plus: a tutorial and cultural enrichment program for middle and high school students

·        Mammography for Life:  a program aimed at increasing diagnostic breast screenings for women who cannot afford such life saving screenings ( population identified, scheduled and serviced by the Petersburg Health Department)

·        Distribution of Health Related Literature:  an activity  to annually distribute more than 3000 pieces of  health related literature   to local churches; and at health/wellness fairs  in the tri-cities area

·        Prostate Cancer Awareness:  provisions made for informing men in the area and giving each an opportunity for screening

·        Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Partnership: an opportunity to  conduct workshops for elementary and middle school students and to reveal the aesthetic value of arts

·        Walk-A-Thon for Health, an opportunity for individuals to improve cardiovascular muscles.

·        “Super Sundays for Seniors”   a program designed to give love, support, friendship and encouragement through visitation and special activities for senior citizens in selected facilities

·        Youth Performing Arts  an opportunity to showcase the different talents and abilities of students in the tri-cities area

·        Poster Art Contest : an opportunity for area students to participate in art competition

·        “Little Miss/Master Manners,” an activity to teach and reinforce character building, good behavior; table etiquette and proper manners

·        Evelyn Berry Scholarship:  financial assistance  given to academically inclined area high school students

·        Ancillary Funds:  a source of financial support given to the Petersburg Symphony Orchestra; Petersburg Health Department; Petersburg Public Schools for Theater TV Productions; Mary Carter Beacon House; Petersburg High School JROTC Program; Petersburg High School Students Scholarship Fund and others

·        Paint it Pink:  an activity, in conjunction with the Susan G. Komen Foundation,  where Links served as hostesses for  Breast Cancer Awareness events

To implement the aforementioned programs, The Petersburg Chapter now has 37 active members, one on leave, and 17 alumni members.
